The devastating storms of early December 2007 began with a few raindrops. Raindrop after raindrop fell until millions upon millions converged and suddenly became a force capable of pushing rivers up over their banks, turning into flood waters that devastated many communities in Oregon and Washington.
We channeled that destructive force into something good on Friday at the Cheese for a Good Cause event, organized to benefit Brad and Meg Gregory of Black Sheep Creamery whose farm was devastated by the flooding. Everyone who came pitched in - whether it was with their time, their products, their money or their volunteer energy. Little by little, contribution by contribution, we raised over $6,000.
It's easy - and trendy these days - to blather on about the importance of local food and farms. Our fabulous Portland food community showed their interest and commitment was more than just skin deep. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed - whether it was money, time, food or cheese, you were one facet of this spectacular community effort.
You can follow the process of recovery efforts at Black Sheep Creamery - and see new lambs Shirley, Goodness and Mercy! - at their web site.
